"Over the Moon": A Lunchtime Drumming Experience for 120 Conference Delegates

Conference delegates gathered around a circle of colourful drums for a drumming team building session

When a conference organiser got in touch with us, there was one small wrinkle. Their client had never done anything different or unusual at their conference before, so understandably they were a little nervous. Even so, they trusted their instinct, and trusted us, to bring a high-energy drumming experience for 120 of their delegates.

Lunchtime, transformed

Seven of us delivered the experience. While delegates were at lunch, we went in and, with brilliant help from the venue staff, transformed the room: drums set out, sticks ready, and a space that looked and felt nothing like the conference hall everyone had been sitting in all morning.

Then the delegates came back in. Within minutes, 120 people who had never played together were drumming as one, building from simple rhythms to their very own finale performance. Loud, joyful, a little wild, and full of smiles. The kind of experience people remember for years.

From nervous to over the moon

The CEO had been a little unsure about doing something so different. By the end, they were absolutely over the moon. The agent who organised the whole conference was relieved and delighted in equal measure: their client had taken a chance on something new, and it had paid off.

That's the part I love most. It takes a bit of courage to put something unexpected into a conference programme. When an organiser trusts their instinct and lets us deliver, the whole event changes gear.

The result

  • 120 delegates drumming together, no musical experience needed

  • A team of seven facilitators, and a room transformed over lunch

  • A nervous CEO turned big fan

  • A huge transformation for the conference, and a massive success
